“I’ve known Sunday Burquest and worked with her for over 20 years in many different capacities. Every time she steps up to the microphone, leads a small group of leaders, adults or youth or when she sits down for a heart to heart – you leave the conversation uplifted and smiling. Her heart to see other peoples lives changed into something better than what they see right now is so uplifting and refreshing. I’ve watched (and listened) as she’s shared her heart and testimony with groups of young people through the years. I love the creative ways she shares her story and the truths she holds dear and the way she engages even the toughest people to reach, all because she genuinely cares about each person’s life and the value it holds. Whatever she does – she does whole heartedly. It’s rare to find a person who cares for young people the way that Sunday does. She is truly an inspiration to me in all she does.” Kelly Shirly, Associate Pastor at Beyond Church
Sunday was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was raised in a Christian, yet somewhat chaotic home, with 4 siblings. She married her husband Jeff in 1992 and they have 4 children; Carter (married to Kara in 2016), Brock, Tucker and daughter Kennedy.
Her passion for ministry and speaking came after high school when she attended Bible College and returned home to work in her local church, Living Word Christian Center (LWCC), Minneapolis, MN. She started as a receptionist and was quickly promoted to pre-school teacher and volunteer coordinator. After being a leader in several areas of ministry, Sunday and Jeff accepted the position of youth pastors in 2001 where for over 12 years they pastored over 300 students, developed a successful small group program and built a leadership team of over 100 volunteers. In 2012, they launched a Young Adult ministry which has grown significantly.
In April 2012, her life changed forever when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. During the yearlong treatment process, Sunday clung tightly to her faith, family and friends for emotional support, all the while trusting the Lord with her life and treatment. She remained strong through it all to finally achieve the title, Breast Cancer Survivor! This gave her the boldness and courage to follow her lifelong, God-given, dream to pursue another title, Sole Survivor. She competed in the 33rd season of the #1 ranked reality television series Survivor: Millennials vs Gen-X. Sunday will quickly tell you that she brought the lingering emotional effects of cancer with her to the Island of FIJI and through the experience on the reality TV show, she was able to leave them behind. After Survivor, Sunday, along with her husband Jeff, made the decision that she would leave her position as a Young Adult pastor and pursue her passion for traveling and speaking.
Sunday draws on her relationship with Jesus and personal experience to share a message of hope. She now devotes her time to sharing her story while teaching others how they also can be – ‘Survivor Strong’.
